Go through the common risk factors and warning signs of heart disease to see whether a heart check-up is due: it is a checklist, not a risk score or a diagnosis.

Are you a man over 45, or a woman over 55?

Do you smoke, or use tobacco in any form, including gutkha, khaini or bidi?

Do you have diabetes?

Do you have high blood pressure?

Do you have high cholesterol?

Did your father or brother have heart disease before 55, or your mother or sister before 65?

Is your waist 90 cm or more (men) or 80 cm or more (women)?

Do you get less than 150 minutes of activity a week, such as brisk walking?

Warning symptoms

Do you have chest pain, pressure or tightness right now?

Do you get chest pain, pressure or tightness when you walk fast, climb stairs or exert yourself?

Do you get breathless on mild effort, such as walking on level ground?

Do you have palpitations (a racing, pounding or uneven heartbeat)?

Have you recently fainted or blacked out?
