What the numbers mean
| BMI | For Indian adults |

| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 22.9 | Normal |
| 23 to 24.9 | Overweight |
| 25 or more | Obese |
These are the cut-offs for Asian Indian adults (consensus statement, 2009). The WHO international cut-offs of 25 for overweight and 30 for obesity are higher, because South Asians carry more health risk at a lower BMI.
When to see a doctor
- Your BMI is 25 or more, especially if diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease runs in your family.
- Your BMI is below 18.5, or you are losing weight without trying.
- You want help to lose weight safely.
