What is thalassaemia?
An inherited blood condition in which the body makes faulty haemoglobin, causing anaemia. Carriers (thalassaemia trait or minor) are usually healthy, but two carriers can have a child with thalassaemia major, so a blood test before marriage or pregnancy is wise.
